William C. “Scotty” Scott Named to Board of Governors of Family Law Section of Virginia State Bar
PRESS RELEASE - July 10, 2009
William C. Scott IV, attorney with MichieHamlett, was recently named to the Board of Governors of the Family Law Section of the Virginia State Bar (VSB). His four-year term started in June, during the VSB annual convention.
Scott has been with the firm since January 1996. He focuses his practice entirely on domestic relations law, including divorce, equitable distribution of property, custody and child and spousal support. He handles cases primarily in the Charlottesville and surrounding counties area; however, he tries cases as far away as Lynchburg, Richmond, Roanoke, Harrisonburg, Northern Virginia, and other areas of the state.
The Virginia State Bar was created in 1938 by the General Assembly as an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Virginia. The creation of the agency unified Virginia's lawyers in a mandatory State Bar. The VSB is governed by its council and executive committee, whose members are elected or appointed from every judicial circuit in the Commonwealth. The mission of the Virginia State Bar, as an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Virginia, is to regulate the legal profession of Virginia; to advance the availability and quality of legal services provided to the people of Virginia; and to assist in improving the legal profession and the judicial system.
The VSB Family Law Section focuses on those who need legal services in the context of their family relationships. This includes laws that are unique to children and families, laws to guide children into adulthood or protect them from neglect, and laws that facilitate marriages, adoptions, assisted conceptions and births. Other laws govern the dissolution of marriages and the distribution of property, as well as laws for determining custody and child and spousal support.
